Sant JordiToday, there is an interesting post by Daniel Hamermesh about why books are reduced and roses are not during la Diada de Sant Jordi in Catalonia on April 23.

For those that don’t know about La Diada. This is the nicest and greatest day in the Catalan calendar. The tradition goes that women get roses and men books to celebrate the killing of the dragon by St George to save his lover. From a drop of the dragon’s blood a rose grew from the earth. Today, women and men give each other books, and all around Barcelona and other Catalan cities the sun shines upon bookstands spread all over every street, and the smell of roses fills the air. The best day to walk down Les Rambles in Barcelona.
